Do You Need a Permit for a Bin in Ottawa?

Before you book a bin or dumpster in Ottawa, it helps to know whether you need anything from the City. The short answer depends on where the bin will sit: on your own property, or on the street.
The Quick Answer
- On your driveway or private property: no permit needed.
- On the street or City right-of-way: you generally need a road occupancy permit from the City of Ottawa. We'll walk you through it when you book.
Rules, fees and processing times are set by the City and can change. Before you plan a street placement, confirm the current requirements with the City of Ottawa by calling 3-1-1.
Driveway Placement: The Easy Option
Most of our Ottawa bin rentals go on the customer's own driveway. It's private property, so there's no permit to arrange, and the bin stays out of traffic and snow-clearing routes. For most homes in Kanata, Barrhaven and Orléans, the driveway is the obvious spot.
Street Placement: When You Need a Permit
If there's no driveway, or the driveway can't be blocked for a few days, the bin may need to go on the street. A bin on the road or in the City right-of-way generally needs a road occupancy permit from the City of Ottawa. Tell us when you book that you're planning a street placement, and we'll explain what you need to sort out before delivery day.
The "right-of-way" can include more than the road itself, such as the boulevard or the strip between the sidewalk and the street. If you're not sure whether your spot counts as private property, ask the City (3-1-1) before booking.
Tight Driveways in Central Ottawa
Older neighbourhoods like the Glebe, Westboro, Centretown and Hintonburg often have narrow driveways, shared laneways and tight frontages. That doesn't usually mean you need the street. Our 10 yard bin is the go-to for tight spots, and it often fits where people assume nothing will. Learn more on our central Ottawa bin rental page.
Practical Placement Tips
- Protect your driveway. Laying boards under the bin's contact points helps spread the weight, especially on newer asphalt or interlock.
- Leave room for the truck. The truck needs clear space to back in, tilt and drop the bin. Move cars, trailers and anything else out of the way before delivery, and watch for low wires and branches.
- Clear snow in winter. Shovel or plow the spot where the bin will sit, and the path the truck will take. Packed snow and ice under a bin make it harder to place and pick up.
- Think about access. Put the bin where you can load it easily without blocking your door, garage or a neighbour's laneway.
- Add delivery notes. The booking form has a spot for notes. Tell us exactly where you want the bin and anything the driver should know.
